What are medical scrubs?

Medical scrubs are the required uniform of nurses and hospital staff. Medical scrubs are meant to be comfortable clothing for medical staff that have to be on their feet, moving, for many hours during the day and night. Though originally in the form of gowns, the modern form of nursing uniforms consists of pants and a short-sleeved, v-necked shirt. The first medical scrubs were white. However, the color began to strain doctors' eyes, so manufacturers began making medical scrubs in other, more soothing colors. Though they are available in many different colors, medical scrubs are usually one, solid color without any decorations or embellishments. Medical scrub vendors will often add subtle design differences to the cut of the garments. Brands include Cherokee scrubs and Figs scrubs.

Why do medical professionals wear medical scrubs?

There are many reasons why medical professionals wear medical scrubs. The first medical uniforms were created in the 1940s because there was a need for separate garments to be used in operating rooms. These garments would ensure that there was no cross-contamination during an operation. They later saw widespread use during the 1950s and 1960s. Medical scrubs are loose and comfortable and allow for a wide range of movement. This is especially good in environments, such as a hospital, where a member of the medical staff might have to move quickly. Uniform scrubs also offer the wearer protection from anything that might come into contact with their skin during their job.

What are medical scrubs made of?

Medical scrubs can be made of many different materials. Cotton Polyester is the most common type of material hospital scrubs are made of. Other common material types used include spandex and rayon. Often, nursing scrubs are made with a blend of these materials to make a soft, breathable, durable fabric.
